Marley ~ The World's Worst Dog? Meet Chloe...

Shawna and Jim

One of my all time favorite stories is Marley & Me by Josh Brogran. I have read that book several times and it never fails to have me in tears laughing. Many of Marley's antics resemble Chloe as a young pup. You see, Chloe wasn't always such a good dog.

As I posted before, Chloe became part of our family on July 10, 2001. She was extremely shy and had a hard time adjusting to her new environment and life without her siblings. We all just spent so much time loving her, playing with her, snuggling her. Eventually, she broke out of her shell...And all hell broke loose.

Chloe had an endless supply of stuffed animals, chew toys, rawhides, etc. None of those compared to the delicacies all over the house. Apparently, there is nothing more tasty than a plastic hangar, a nice book (she preferred hardcovers) or some footwear. Okay, so not such a big deal, right?! Isn't this typical puppy behavior? Well, as Chloe grew, so did her appetite for the finer things in life. My husband Jim has always worn the sunglass brand Maui Jims. The style he wore ran about $300. Chloe ate two pairs. Chloe also ate a patio furniture set. I kid you not. Because of her destructive behavior in the home, we kept her outside during the day while we worked. This particular day we came home to find the mesh on all four chairs ripped to shreds.

I chose the above picture for a reason. There are actually two stories involved here. Now Chloe ate hangars, books, sunglasses, footwear and furniture yet somehow managed to remain part of the family. Shawna would justify every incident with some excuse or another. Even Shawna's patience wore thin when Chloe discovered lingerie. I will never forget the day that Chloe came flying down the stairs with a bra hanging from her mouth and Shawna screaming and chasing after her. (There is nothing Chloe likes better than a good chase.) Jim and I were terrified that Shawna would eventually catch Chloe. She was SO upset. Jim diffused the situation by mending the bra. That's what's happening in the picture. And Chloe lived to see another day.

Take a look at the size of the bean bag that Shawna is sitting on. Right behind the bean bag is the doggy door and to the left are some cabinets under the counter. After the patio furniture incident, we began putting Chloe in the dog run behind the house. Because the doggy door had no insert to block her entrance into the house, we would open the cabinet and push the bean bag in front of it to prevent her from entering.

I'm not sure where the three of us were that day, but we did not get home until dusk. Shawna was the first up the stairs. I hear her scream, "Oh My God, Oh My God! Don't let Jim come up!" We walk in to find her covered head to toe in the foam beads from the bean bag. She was crying and desperately attempting to clean up piles and piles of those little white beads. Our entire living room was covered in white. It looked like a major snowstorm had occurred in our living room. To make matters worse, we were having Santa Ana winds and the air was full of static. Those beads were just jumping onto us, the furniture, the walls. Years later, I was still finding those suckers!

This is what we think happened: Chloe was really upset with being outside and to she must have been extremely frightened by the howling winds and desperate to get inside. She somehow managed to get her head through the door and grab a hold of the bean bag. Now, that big ole bag WAS NOT going to fit through the opening, so she thought she might eat her way in. She had chewed a gigantic hole in the bag and somehow pulled the shell out the doggy door while the beads stayed inside. She was a determined little pup and she got what she wanted.

As for us, it took a couple of years, but we finally figured out that all this destructive behavior was a result of being locked out of the house. Once we allowed her access in and out of the home, the major problems ceased. Not to say all the shenanigans were over, but that's a story for another day...

Not such a happy day :(

Chloe's lab work came in this morning. Unfortunately, her all her kidney values are way up. At this point there is nothing more than can be done as far as medication. Her doctor did say that she looked good for as advanced as her kidney disease is. Chloe is a stubborn cuss, so hopefully she'll hang in there. We are just praying for the best and preparing for the worst. Once kidney function is lost, it can not be replaced. The best that can be done is to keep the values stable and until recently, Chloe was relatively stable since her stage four diagnosis in March of last year.

So basically, we have no idea how much longer we will have Chloe. Right now it's important to do the things that Chloe loves to do as long as she still loves to do them. It is heart wrenching to think of the difficult decisions ahead, but I can't stick my head in the sand and pretend everything is alright. It may sound callous to think this way, but it is inevitable and would be irresponsible of me to not be prepared.

On a positive note, I went through my picture box and found several photos of Chloe that brought terrific memories. Stay tuned for happy stories...

It's Tough To Say Goodbye :(

I took Jim to the airport early this morning. He's heading back to Canada tomorrow after staying in Michigan tonight to visit his family. Jim manages renewable energy construction projects and recently started a wind farm in Tumbler Falls, BC. It's definitely tough on our little family having him so far away, but with the economy as it is, we are blessed that he is working.

Chloe did so well yesterday with her activity level and eating/drinking. I'm worried that with Jim gone, she will go into a funk. She spent hours laying in the hallway today, waiting for "Dad" to come home. Breaks my heart :( She did eat food out of her bowl, without coaxing, this afternoon. This is HUGE! I have had to basically hand feed her the past couple of weeks. She is on a medication that is supposed to stimulate her appetite. Seems like it's beginning to work a little better. We will keep our fingers crossed!

We have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with her specialist. She loves Dr. Lyon! Bloodwork needs to be done to see how her kidney values are doing. They also need a urine sample. Because Chloe goes through so much already, I attempt to spare her any additional poking and prodding by collecting her urine myself. In the beginning, it was a relatively easy task. But now she's onto me! If she glimpes the specimen container in my hand, she'll run away from me! When I am able to catch her, I swear she squats down lower to make it harder on me! It's not pleasant for either of us, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do!

Please keep your fingers crossed for stable results! Good Night :)

Sharing our bed ~ Part Two

Hoggin' Dad's side...

How we came to share a bed with an 80 lb dog.

Wow! Chloe is having a great day so far! She actually jumped up, ran to the door and barked when the FedEx guy showed up on our doorstep. Then a bird had the audacity to land on the back patio. This didn't go over well with Chloe, who just about went throught the sliding glass door to get at it! This may not sound like much, but enjoying doggy things is a big part of knowing how she's feeling.

OK ~ I promised a happy story, so here it is:

Chloe became part of the family on July 10, 2001. Jim, Shawna and I had been living in the city of San Diego. Jim & I decided we wanted to sell our home and buy a larger home in the smaller town of Ramona, up in the hills. This did not go over well with a teenage Shawna, who felt that Ramona might as well be Timbuktu. To take the sting out of the move, we promised to get a puppy.

Jim & Shawna visited the Helen Woodward Animal Center and looked at all the available doggies up for adoption. They didn't have much luck until they spotted a little pup in quarantine. "Zig Zag" was recovering from kennel cough. It was love at first sight. After work, I met Zig Zag and adoption papers were signed.

When we adopted Zig Zag, she was just a tiny scruff of a dog! She was born on May 1, 2001. Her records show her breed as a dachsund/pitbull mix ~ HUH?! Supposedly, the dachsund was the daddy. I still have a difficult time picturing this! Anyway, the pup was supposed to grow into a medium size, 40 pound adult dog.

Zig Zag is no name for a pup as cute as this one (or any pup at all, for that matter!) so while I was shooting for Layla, Shawna ultimately came up with the winning name ~ Chloe.

Because we all worked, it was decided that Chloe would be crate-trained. We purchased a cozy crate for her and lined it with a soft blanket and her water & food bowls. At night, Shawna kept Chloe in her room. Even in a new environment and away from her brother, Chloe never cried. It took us a few days, but Jim & I discovered why Chloe was so quiet and well-behaved.

I went into Shawna's room in the morning to wake her up to discover this: Chloe's crate on Shawna's bed, the crate door open, and Chloe cuddled up right next to Shawna. Apparently, Chloe did whimper and whine while in her crate at night. Because Shawna is such a sucker for sad faces (I love you to pieces, but your weak!) she started out by putting the crate on her bed. When Chloe continued to whine, Shawna opened the door, "in case she did want out." And that, my friends, was the end of crate-training. It was also the end of the 'No Dogs on the Furniture' rule.

So Chloe grew. And grew. And grew. And so did Shawna's interest in boys and hanging out with her new Ramona friends. Oftentimes, Jim & I were in bed (with Chloe) long before Shawna's curfew was up. Thank heavens for Cal King beds!

Our friends at Helen Woodward must have gotten some bad information: Fully grown, Chloe topped off at 80 pounds, and as far as the dachsund/pitbull mix, you tell me. I don't see it. I actually had a Rhodesian Ridgeback owner ask if Chloe was Ridgeback. Hmmmm...

Firsts & Lasts

Feeling a bit melancholy this Fourth of July. Everyday is stressful when dealing with a terminally ill pet, but holidays are particularly difficult. Shawna came over with Isabella. Izzie had on the "Happy 4th" outfit I bought her. She is so darn adorable and brings so much joy to us. It's awesome to celebrate "firsts" with the baby, but at the same time it's incredibly sad knowing that this will be Chloe's last.
P.S. ~ The last couple of blogs have been a bit sad. I promise to share happy, fun Chloe stories soon :)

For the Love of Dogs

There are countless stories of animal lovers who have left their pets substantial amounts of money in their wills. Take Leona Helmsley, who, upon her death in 2007, left her dog Trouble a cool $12 million bucks. My own grandmother (God rest her soul) provided for her beloved Sydney by including a provision in her living trust: Her home was not to be sold until Sydney's passing.
Ten years ago, I would have thought this just way over the top. That was BC... (Before Chloe)
BC, I was very indifferent to dogs. I grew up with dogs in the home ~ they were just never mine. It wasn't until the adoption of a sickly little mutt in July of 2001 that my heart went to the dogs. The minute that we brought home that little ball of fur, my life changed forever. There has not been one single day in the last 10 years that Chloe has failed to make me smile or laugh. No matter how crappy of a day I have had, Chloe has always had the knack of making the day better with a wag of her tail and her goofy grin.
Chloe is going through some major medical problems. Everyday she is forced to swallow nine pills, sit still while an IV needle is inserted into her neck and be patient while 1/2 a bag of IV solution drips into her body. She puts up with me trying to force her to try to eat different foods and constantly telling her to drink her water. And yet, as crappy as she feels, she still finds the strength to wag her tail or attempt a grin, just to make her mom & dad happy.
Leaving tons of money or a home to your best friend doesn't seem so crazy anymore...

Welcome to my blog :)

Life is quite a journey with lots of twists and turns. My world has been willy-nilly this past month. With husband, Jim, working in Canada, the majority of my social interaction has been with my dog, Chloe, and three month old granddaughter, Isabella. OK, not so much interaction! With so much going on in my life right now and a lack of adult interaction, I thought starting a blog seemed like a good idea. In retrospect, however, unless you, my dear friends. choose to follow me and reply occasionally, I might as well be taking to a dog and three month old. That being said, please follow me on my new blogging venture!
